The Mary Celeste was a cargo brigantine carrying a load of industrial alcohol to Gibralter in 1897. It was sighted adrift off the shore of Spain and boarded. The salvage crew found no trace of the crew, the captain or the captain's wife and young daughter. No one who had been on the Celeste was ever seen or heard from again. There were no supplies missing from the ship and no obvious reason for the crew to have abandoned her.

To this day the fate of the Mary Celeste's crew remains a mystery.
